I read this blog to understand more about how humans and dogs interact with each other and think more about my initial questions. My next questions I want to explore will be the psychological process of forming bonds in humans and dogs. I would also like to learn more about how humans and canines began our bond. Were cavemen curling up with dog's at night? Was it much later when humans began colonising new countries? Next I need to clear up my topic/focus question. I also need to extend my research to the psychological level and understand the minds of humans and canines. I also need to look into the difference between dogs and other animals when it comes to relationships with humans. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-human-beast/200904/why-are-humans-and-dogs-so-good-living-together
REFLECTION 2
I have created my outline and I have written my thesis for the written component of the project. I have also written a draft of my introduction. The most important ideas surrounding my project are the psychology of human and canine bonds and the history of the human-canine bond. I don’t think that I will need to create an experience for my readers to understand the ideas above because most people have/had a dog in their household or at least known a canine at some point before. I am unsure of what I’ll be doing for my artifact but I think it will be something along the lines of my Dog’s old collar. I also do not know who I will be speaking with for the outside component of the project because I don’t know any experts in the field and the Corona Virus will make it extremely difficult to meet with anyone.
This Article explains the importance of understanding your dog and the needs for dog owners to have a basic grasp of a dog’s mind. The article also explores canine communication. Did you know dogs have different kinds of barks for different situations? You can also communicate with dog's through body language. The article also discusses the importance of training your dogs as well as covers how a well behaved dog should act.
This article covers some of the history behind the study of canine havior. It also covers communication with dog's using body language My data led to the conclusion that the average dog can learn to recognize about 165 words and gestures. Clearly language is not only used by humans. The article also talks about how difficult it is to test a dog because they are so food driven. The article also describes play behavior, crazy running, jumping, growling, fighting are all things that dogs do when they are playing with each other. It may seem like they are fighting but it only gets violent .5% of the time. Dogs are also very good at communicating with each other regarding playing. Dogs have to learn to restrain themselves in the same way that children learn to restrain themselves in social situations. This article is a good source for information on how a dog's mind works.
This article talks about the similarities and differences between a dog’s mind a humans mind. It also discusses the canine’s need to be lead/controlled. This is because they are so nervous and unaware of what is happening the act of leading a dog build an extreme amount of trust. This need for leadership could be a possible reason humans and dogs bonded in the first place. This helps my project by helping me understand a dog's mind.
This article is about dog's episodic memory; whether or not they can remember things that have happened in the past. Dogs have been tested to see if they can repeat actions shown to them by a human at various time ranging from 1 minute to 1 hour. This proves that dogs are conscious and creating memories all the time. This is important for my project because this is a similarity that dogs have with humans.
The first fossils of dogs that are strictly different than wolves can be dated somewhere between 20,000-40,000 years ago. This article has different theories for why dogs and humans bonded in the first place. This information will be helpful as that is one of my main questions.
Capstone Corona edition: artifact artist statement
My idea for my project is about humans and dogs and how we have such strong bonds with them. My main question is why are dogs considered man’s best friend and why do we have such strong bonds with canines. My plan is to research the human and canine psychology surrounding the creation of relationships. I chose this topic because I love dogs and I have had a very close relationship with my dogs for many years. Originally I was going to write an essay about this topic to explain and describe the relationships between humans and dogs. However, I realized “what better way to explain the relationships between humans and dogs than to describe my relationship with my dog” and decided that I was going to do a ted talk or podcast and appeal to the viewers emotions a little more than just spit facts at them because this is an emotional and sensitive topic. For my artifact I chose my old dog's collar, sadly he passed away back in january but he meant the world to my family and I. I want to share this bond and relationship with my peers with the hopes of describing human and canine relationships. I will begin with an introduction talking about the origin of human and canine relationships, then I will transition into breaking down a dog's mind and a human’s mind while discussing some canine behavior such as their need to be led and controlled. I will then dive into one of the biggest components of human and canine relationships which is trust, surrounding the canines unawareness. I will also discuss canine memory, canine interactions with other canines, and canine communication. Then, after the information part of the presentation I will take a more personal approach and discuss my own relationship with my dog while applying all of the previous information and giving real world examples of trust, communication, and behavior. My conclusion will wrap up my stories and I will hit on the main points of the presentation again. I will also make 1-3 puns (I dogn’t know which ones though). Other than that my conclusion is pretty ruff, I’m not sure what else to include.
Cover Letter This project is very near and dear to my heart because of the close bond I had with my dog. I’ve always loved animals but dogs have always fascinated me. I love how they have emotions and feelings and they can tell when you’re happy or sad, without even being able to speak you can have a whole conversation. When taking on this project I knew I had my work cut out for me, from the research and analysis to articulating my ideas in a clear format that can get my point across. Especially because of my relatively informal topic. I think it is important to understand the beings around us and I think many people can gain from learning about their canines.
